This was the story of the Citicorp building opened in 1977, with 59 floors and 279 feet tall. But there was another difficulty: the steel structure was light and the resonance would cause the building to vibrate too much from a given wind load. To solve it, a mass buffer was used (mass damper), whose function is to add weight and inertia to the building automatically compensating for horizontal impulses. Everything was going well until a year after the building opened, Diane Hartley, then engineering student, warned the design engineer. Hartley found that the structure did not adequately account for the wind load. The calculating engineer reviewed his calculations and saw that Hartley was right: The correct hypothesis increased by up to 160% the horizontal forces that the building should withstand. happily, the safety margins used in the calculation allowed the structure to resist even unforeseen loads. However, in the designer's analysis, it was found that to reduce costs, the construction company had used rivets instead of the welds in the project. The reinforcement of the structure took place in the same year, workers forced to sign confidentiality agreements welded all joints in the building. With the new weld, the skyscraper could withstand winds up to four times stronger than the record already recorded in the city.
